I got swabbed because I have always wanted to be doctor. I believe that I have one life on this

Earth to make as much of an impact as possible on other people’s lives. I realized that I could

help this person in such an intimate way that no other form of medicine could ever come close to.

I had the opportunity to sacrifice part of myself for the patient. I know that sounds dramatic,

but it’s they only way I can explain it.

I received a call from DKMS last August notifying me that I was a match. They told me constantly

that I could back out anytime, but the later I waited to back out, the greater the consequences

for the patient; they were very helpful, patient, and kind. I had to give blood to check for any

blood related diseases and STD’s. In November, they flew me to D.C. to have a physical; everything

was paid for and I was reimbursed for food and other expenses. When I actually donated, I chose to

have the “surgery” instead of the aphoresis blood work. It all went well, and it took me about a

month to be 100% again. I could walk after the surgery, but I was basically anemic for a month. On

a scale of 1 to 10, my pain was a 1 (10 being the most painful). The worst part of recovery was

being tired and having the common headaches associated with anemia symptoms.

The patient now has my stem cells and white blood cells running through their body, keeping them

alive.
